A Guide for Text & Typography in GIMP

Requested by rizbef.

a beginner's guide to GIMP

GIMP is a free image editing program that brags on offering many of the same features that Photoshop provides. Based on most comments I’ve received over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that GIMP is actually nothing like Photoshop.

Now, before I get any further, I’d like to share a few disclaimers.
1. I actually use a backdated version of GIMP, partly because I’ve been using the same program since I started iconning, and partly because the one time I did try an updated version I had a panic attack and ended up digging around in the archives to find my old version again. If you can find and download an older version (I use GIMP 2.6) you’ll probably have a much smoother, stress-free GIMP experience.

2. From what I can gather, Photoshop gives you more options when it comes to text effects, plus has handy filters that automatically apply them for you. Some of my tips and tricks might seem like a long way around to get the same basic look, but that’s because I’m using a cheap knockoff. Feel free to share about your process and typography hacks, but keep in mind that they might not translate the same way in GIMP as they would in Photoshop.

3. I’m slightly lazy when it comes to some of the more complicated features of image editing programs, so you may have noticed that my text placement is usually pretty simple. That’s also why you won’t see any tips on how to get your text to follow a path, warp, follow a circle, etc. If you have questions about any of my icons specifically, please let me know and I'd be happy to share~

Replacing Photobucket?

Based on some different posts I've seen on my F-page recently, I'm under the impression that Photobucket is slowly going through and taking down images that have been linked on other sites. I'm not exactly sure what the point of Photobucket is if you can't share images anymore. What I do know is that my entire icon collection and every single image I've ever posted is hosted on PB. This disaster hasn't hit me yet, but I'm preparing myself for the worst case scenario, especially considering how image-heavy calendarsquares is.

I am going to need a new image hosting site that will allow me to upload multiple images at once, keep them up permanently, and because everything I do is usually pretty image-heavy, I need something that will let you upload a TON of images without making you pay to upgrade after filling up your free capacity.

Any recommendations? I'd really appreciate the help <3

remember when it all began

I don't know why I love stats so much, especially considering how bad I am at math. LJ has been a part of my life for a long time now, and seeing how all the little things have added up is really very impressive. I only wish that they could also calculate how many icons I've made in that span of time!

This also seems like a great place to thank you all of you who are seeing this. The iconning community is the greatest, most supportive, and most positive group of people I've ever hung out with. Your diversity of talents and strengths inspires me to keep on being creative, not just here on LJ but also in RL. Thanks, everyone <3

Ladybug Battle, Anyone?

I just finished watching Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir on Netflix and I'm obsessed. It's actually kind of hard to watch anything else now because it's just disappointing after the level of awesomeness that Ladybug was. /sigh

SO I was thinking it might be nice to host an icon battle so we can share favorite caps/scenes and fangirl about the show for a little bit while we wait on Season 2. Anybody else interested?

bestof_icons - Best of 2016

I'd like to say a big, heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in nominating my icons at bestof_icons this year, especially those of you who left lovely comments and feedback along with ther picks. I would have loved to thank each one of you individually, but I was kind of scared to spam the mods with so many extra comments... just know that those comments really made my day and encouraged me to keep trying new things.
